Friday, Aug. 4, 2006, at Oakwood's Hebron Oaks Nursing Home, in Madison,.
Born in Superior on Dec. 24, 1911, she was the last survivor of 10 children
born to Roy Edelstein and Ida Zalk Edelstein. Dorothy graduated from Superior
State Teachers College in 1933, and taught school in Bayfield County,
Reedsburg, and at Lakewood School in Madison. She married Attorney Gordon
Sinykin on May 2, 1941, in Milwaukee. Dorothy served as Big Chief of the
Nakoma Welfare League, President of the Lawyers Wives of Dane County and
bookkeeper for The Progressive Magazine. She enjoyed figure skating, and was
a figure skating test judge with the USFSA. Both she and Gordon were charter
members and held various officer positions with the Madison Figure Skating
Club, the Wagon Wheel FSC and the FSC of Madison. In 1986, they were inducted
into the City of Madison Ice Skating Hall of Fame for "extraordinary
personal contributions for the betterment of ice skating in the Madison
community." Dorothy also enjoyed gardening, bird watching, playing
Bridge, playing the piano, reading, Muskie fishing on the Chippewa Flowage,
spending time at her cottage on the Wisconsin River and the company of her
Toy Poodles. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon; and is
survived by her children, Daniel (Sheri) Sinykin and Susan (Steve) Anderson
of Madison, and Philip (Joan) Sinykin of San Jose, Calif.; six grandchildren,
Jason Anderson, Kristi, Sean (Khanh), Aaron (Debbie), Rudi (Esther) and
Joshua (Julia) Sinykin; and many nieces and nephews. Services will be held at
TEMPLE BETH EL, 2702 Arbor Drive, Madison on Friday, Aug. 11, 2006, at 10:30
a.m. and will be followed by a meal of condolence. A private family burial at
Forest Hill Cemetery will follow. The family would like to thank the 3rd
floor staff of Hebron Oaks for their care and compassion during the last
seven years. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dorothy's memory may be made
to: U.S. Figure Skating Memorial Fund, 20 First St., Colorado Springs, CO
